Healthy Schools
The school is committed to the Northamptonshire Healthy Schools programme and promotes a healthy lifestyle through its curriculum and provision. The school building and its grounds are no smoking zones. Signage throughout the school clearly states this for parents and visitors.
We hold the Activemark for our Sports curriculum awarded in Autumn 2006. This incudes the delivery of 2 hours high quality PE for all our children.
We are very keen to develop traditional team sports through formal and extra curricular activities. A close link is maintained with Roade Sports College which offers sporting opportunities. We also seek to involve outside sporting professionals in the development and training of the children.
In the early stages of Key Stage 2, skills are heavily focussed upon, but opportunities are provided for children to be involved in competitive team games.
Friendly matches are organised against neighbouring schools and children from Upper Key Stage 2 are selected to represent our school in the Roade Area Sports tournaments.
Cartons of fresh Milk are available to all school children. Milk is supplied to the school by ‘Cool Milk at School ltd’ and all enquiries should be made directly to Cool Milk at School (details available from the school office). Prior to supply starting parents will be invoiced directly from Cool Milk at school (Approximately £3 to £5 for a half term).
We have worked hard on promoting healthy eating in school. Children in KS1 are provided with a mid-morning fruit snack through the Governments Fruit for Schools Scheme. We also offer the facility for KS2 pupils to purchase a daily fruit snack at a cost of 60p per week. Parents choosing not to buy into this scheme are asked to ensure that their child’s mid-morning snack is a healthy one.
School meals are not provided and, therefore, children staying at school during the midday break should bring a packed lunch. Children should bring a packed lunch in a neat, compact lunch box. In keeping with the promotion of a healthy diet we ask parents not to pack sweets or fizzy drinks. Small "thermos" type flasks or small cartons may be brought to school for drinks, glass bottles are not allowed. Lunch boxes should be clearly marked with the child's name.
All children are issued with a water bottle at the beginning of the school year and drinking water is available to them throughout the day. Should a water bottle need to be replaced these can be purchased from the school office at a cost of 75p per bottle.
Infestation of head lice in schools is a national problem. This is an unpleasant situation for the children and parents affected. The only way we can eradicate this problem in our school is by every parent examining their child’s hair on a daily basis. If all parents co-operate, together we can beat the bug.
