Year 1

Welcome to Year 1 at Hartwell Primary School. In Year 1, children make the transition from the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) to Key Stage 1 (KS1).

The Year 1 curriculum builds upon and extends the experiences that children have had in Reception. Learning through play continues to be an important part of the school day, and children are gradually eased into more formal learning as the year goes on, so that they remain motivated and eager learners.

At Hartwell, children build foundational reading, writing and mathematical skills that support their learning journey throughout the school. Our engaging curriculum encourages children’s love of reading and allows children to become fluent and expressive readers ready to progress into Year 2. Children’s physical, emotional and social development is nurtured throughout their time in Year 1 in order to foster confident, resilient and enthusiastic learners.

Learning follows the National Curriculum and we endeavour to make the children’s learning experience as child-based and inspiring as possible. Children in Year 1 study five exciting themes: Daring Dinosaurs, Terrific Toys, Under the Sea, New Life and Fantastic Fairy Tales. Subjects are carefully linked to these themes where possible and children are given enriching opportunities to explore their topics in a practical, fun and creative way.
